Rewriting Stories: Our Commitment to Education for Young People and Adults

In September, the second edition of Rewriting Stories: Our Commitment to Education for Young People and Adults was held in Lima. The event was promoted by the business-led movement Es Hoy and Dispurse Foundation as a space to showcase concrete progress in Education for Young People and Adults (EYPA) and to recognize those making it possible to expand this right across the country.

Rewriting Stories: Our Commitment to Education for Young People and Adults

The event took place on Wednesday, September 24, at the NOS Theatre of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), and brought together representatives from the public sector, the private sector and civil society committed to closing the educational gaps that affect millions of young people and adults in Peru.

A milestone centered on collaboration

In Peru, more than 8 million young people and adults have not completed basic education, and nearly 2 million of them are older adults, according to figures from the Ministry of Education. Against this backdrop, Rewriting Stories has consolidated itself as an institutional milestone that demonstrates how collaboration among different actors can generate real and sustainable educational opportunities.

During the event, a symbolic graduation ceremony was held for 55 students from different regions of the country, recognizing their efforts to resume and complete their educational pathways. Of this group, 16 students are part of programs implemented by Dispurse Foundation in Cusco, Cajamarca, Pasco, Apurímac and Lima.

Particular attention was drawn to the participation of older adult students from Pasco, beneficiaries of the Pensión 65 national program, highlighting how joint work between the State and civil society can guarantee access to relevant education while also incorporating digital skills and innovative methodologies.

Recognizing partners who are making a difference

The event also included recognition of companies, local governments and educational institutions that are actively promoting Education for Young People and Adults in their territories.

Among them, special recognition was given to the District Municipality of Simón Bolívar (Pasco). Since 2023, under the leadership of Mayor Jaime William Zelada Chamorro, the municipality has sustained coordination with Pensión 65 and other local actors to integrate older adults into educational spaces, removing access barriers and strengthening their autonomy.

Education throughout life

For Dispurse Foundation, Rewriting Stories reaffirms the importance of continuing to promote flexible educational models, the recognition of prior learning, and the certification of learning outcomes as key elements to guarantee the right to education throughout life.

Initiatives such as ¡EPA! by Es Hoy, the Literacy Program, and the Open Community Schools promoted by Dispurse Foundation demonstrate that it is possible to build relevant educational responses from the territories, with an impact on people’s lives and on the development of more inclusive communities.

The second edition of Rewriting Stories not only celebrated the achievements reached, but also delivered a clear message: closing educational gaps among young people and adults is an urgent task that requires commitment, collaboration and collective decision-making.
